ICP is the native utility token of the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP), serving multiple essential functions within the network ecosystem. As the governance token, ICP holders can stake their tokens in neurons within the Network Nervous System (NNS), vote on NNS proposals to participate in decentralized decision-making, and earn voting rewards in the form of maturity that can be converted into newly minted ICP.
ICP tokens can be converted into cycles, which serve as the network's fuel for computation, data storage, and network bandwidth. The Internet Computer's reverse gas model allows developers to pre-charge smart contracts (canisters) with cycles, enabling end-users to interact with applications without paying for computation directly.
The network mints new ICP tokens to reward node providers who operate the infrastructure supporting the Internet Computer, ensuring the network remains decentralized and secure. Additionally, ICP is used for various ecosystem transactions, including purchasing NFTs and swapping tokens on decentralized exchanges.
